The People’s National Front (PNF), led by former President Abdullah Yameen, will hold its party formation rally on Monday evening, and the party confirmed that he will also attend the rally.
The Election Commission approved the party's formation meeting on Thursday after the 3,000 members required to form a political party were met.
In a post on X, former minister Maleeh Jamal, who is in charge of the party's formation, then said Yameen had asked permission to attend the rally.
Maleeh on Sunday confirmed on X that Yameen will attend the rally. However, he did not clarify whether Yameen’s participation was endorsed by the corrections service.
When asked about it by Atoll Times, Maleeh did not respond directly, saying, "I don't want to see the response from corrections”.
“We asked for permission to complete a procedure,” he said.
Corrections confirmed that Yameen had requested permission to attend the rally. The agency’s spokeswoman, Aminath Yusreen said Yameen has now been responded to, but she did not say what the response was.
“It was a letter sent to a private person,” she said noting that such letters are not shared with the media.
When asked if he had received a reply from the corrections department, Maleeh repeatedly said that Yameen would attend the meeting. He did not confirm whether permission was granted.
The PNF founding ceremony is scheduled to be held at Ghiyasuddin International School Hall.
Yameen founded PNF following the falling out with incumbent president Dr. Mohamed Muizzu shortly after the latter won the presidential elections in November last year. Yameen's candidacy was denied due to his incaceration.
Yameen was convicted in the MMPRC graft case and sentenced to 11 years in prison pending a verdict in the High Court. He is currently under house arrest following the concessions granted by former President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih's administration. He is under house arrest on the condition that he should not indulge in politics. However, he has been repeatedly involved in political activities, and is now confirmed to attend his new party’s formation ceremony.
