National honour for Shakir’s contributions to literature and history

Ahmed Shakir, widely known as Kashima Shakir, was conferred the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Dhiyamigili (Nishaan Dhiyamigili Sharafuge Izzaiy) on Saturday in recognition of his contributions to Maldivian history and Dhivehi literature.

Shakir began his public service career on July 30, 1969, and served the state for more than 41 years. Alongside his work in public service, he has contributed to the fields of literature, history, public speaking, theatre and scriptwriting.
Over the years, he has authored and published works on Maldivian history and has remained active in promoting Dhivehi literature through writing and public engagement.
His contributions have previously been recognised through a number of national awards. In 1984, he received the National Award of Encouragement in the field of performing arts for theatrical acting. He was again honoured with the National Award of Encouragement in 2016 for compiling, writing and publishing historical books.
In 2022, Shakir received the National Award of Encouragement in the field of Dhivehi literature for public speaking.
He was also presented with the President’s Special Award in 2001 for authoring children’s books in Dhivehi that met educational standards.
According to the President’s Office, Shakir continues to contribute to Dhivehi literature and the preservation of Maldivian history through his writing and related work.
The Order of the Distinguished Rule of Dhiyamigili is among the national honours conferred by the state in recognition of service and contributions to the Maldives.
