President Mohamed Muizzu has said that freedom of expression must be exercised within limits and with consideration for the rights of others.
Speaking at a rally in HA. Utheemu on Sunday to mark National Day, the President made the remarks while Parliament is considering the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill, introduced by independent but pro-government MP Abdul Hannan Abubakar. The bill has drawn criticism from both local and international groups.
The President said governments would continue to pursue development, but that progress also required the efforts of citizens.
“We have to develop our minds. It is important to instil nationalism in our hearts and pass it on to future generations. Then we will move forward as a nation,” he said.
Muizzu urged Maldivians to uphold social values and traditions, including respect for parents, care for neighbours, and responsibility towards children and the elderly. He also called for recognition of equal dignity and honour among all citizens.
“None of us has the right to invade the dignity and honour of others. We have no freedom to say whatever comes to our minds or write whatever comes to our minds without regard,” he said, adding that safeguarding words and actions was a shared duty.
The President said people must act honestly and faithfully in fulfilling their responsibilities and to remain loyal to the country.
“If we decide to move forward in that way, development will come through the combined efforts of government initiatives and the contributions of the people,” he said.
