President Mohammed Muizzu has said that Ras Male is being developed by reclaiming the Fushidhiggaru lagoon, based on the lessons learned from the 2004 tsunami disaster.
Speaking at a rally on the occasion of National Unity Day on Tuesday evening, the President noted that the 'safe island concept' was used in the reconstruction of some islands after the tsunami disaster.
"The Ras Male project that we launched recently by this government is also designed for the 'Safe Island Concept'. However, the primary purpose of building cities in this way is to save the property, homes and lives of the people," he said.
"That's why the island's soil is raised and ports and canals are built according to the flow of water and wind. For safety and security”.
Despite the development of the Safe Island concept, the President said, true safety is something else entirely and from another source, referring to God. He also referred to the meaning of the verses of the Qur'an read at the beginning of the event.
The meaning of the verses is to hold fast to Islam and remember the blessings given by Allah.
Ras Male is being developed by dredging 1,153 hectares of land. The site is excavated to a height of 2.5 meters from sea level and 3 meters in the middle.
The city will be advertised as an 'Eco-Maldives City' to foreign countries. The government has also decided to provide energy generation and transport services in an environmentally friendly manner.
