Addu council urges public to avoid link road amid heavy rain
According to MET, the city received about 100 millimetres of rain on Saturday, the highest recorded rainfall in the country that day.
Addu City Council has advised the public to avoid travelling on Addu Link Road unless necessary, after continued heavy rain worsened conditions and made parts of the road unsafe.
Heavy rain has continued across parts of the Maldives, affecting Addu, Fuvahmulah, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll and some central atolls.
Addu has been among the areas most affected. According to Maldives Meteorological Service records, the city received about 100 millimetres of rain on Saturday, the highest recorded rainfall in the country that day.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Addu City Council said pipes had been installed in several areas to enable pumps to drain floodwater.
The council said conditions on the Link Road had deteriorated further due to the rain and urged motorists not to use the road except for essential travel.
It also advised drivers using the Link Road and other roads in the city to exercise caution, reduce speed and pay attention to flooded sections.
The National Disaster Management Authority said on Saturday that severe flooding had been reported in several areas of Addu, with more than 70 homes in Feydhoo and Maradhoo affected by floodwater.
Some residents were also moved to temporary accommodation after their homes became uninhabitable.
