Foundation laid for Maldives’ largest mosque in Hulhumalé
According to information released by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, the mosque will be able to accommodate approximately 10,000 worshippers at a time.

The foundation has been laid for what is planned to be the largest mosque built in the Maldives, with capacity for nearly 10,000 worshippers at a time.
The foundation-laying ceremony was held in Hulhumalé on Sunday, coinciding with the commemoration of 900 years since the Maldives embraced Islam.
President Mohamed Muizzu announced plans for the mosque in his presidential address at the opening of Parliament earlier this year.
The mosque, which will be built in Hulhumalé Phase II, will be named “Jami' as-Sultan Muhammad bin Abdullah”, after the ruler under whom the Maldives embraced Islam.
President Muizzu, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed and Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Ali Zuhair took part in laying the foundation.
Bandar Abdullah, chief executive of Saudi Arabia’s Al Rajhi company, which will construct the mosque, and Saudi Ambassador Yahya Hassan Al-Qahtani also participated in the ceremony.
According to information released by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, the mosque will be able to accommodate approximately 10,000 worshippers at a time.
The development will also include facilities intended to support Islamic education, cultural activities and community engagement.
Dedicated offices will be provided for imams and administrative functions, while a centre will be established to host educational, cultural and social activities.
The complex will also include an Islamic library and cultural centre, as well as a Quran museum displaying historical information related to the Quran.
