President Mohamed Muizzu has said that trying to hurt a legitimate government for a particular group's own interests and to attain power is definitely treason against the people.
The general committee of parliament on Thursday approved a proposal to amend the rules of procedure of the 19th parliament to allow the president and vice president to be removed from office by the vote of the opposition MDP members alone.
The amendments must be passed by the parliament floor, and the president did not comment directly on the changes on Thursday evening. The president, however, highlighted the incident associated with the Huravee Day and described the attempt to tremble the legitimate government as a betrayal of the people.
The President said that when we look at the incident of Huravee Day, we see a bright side and a dark side of history. As such, he noted:
-
The bright side of history shows the hero of the day, Muleege Dhon Hassan Manikufaanu or Dhon Bandaarain and the army of Maldivians loyal to him
-
The dark side of history shows Shamsuddin and Muhyiddin, who betrayed the country and were killed by the Dutch army that later invaded the Maldives
-
Shamsuddin and Muhyiddin, who were at the top of the Maldivian state, sought foreign aid and wrote lies to the Dutch through letters more than once
-
The result was that the Dutch army invaded and destroyed the city
-
Shamsuddin and Muhyiddin were drowned by the Dutch in the end, saying those who had betrayed their own country would not be loyal to another state
Every Maldivian child should learn from these things as long as Maldives lasts, he said.
"If you want to shake up a legitimate government, and especially to show your own strength, regardless of consequences, is a betrayal of the State and this beloved Maldivian family," he said.
"Those who plan and carry out things to harm the country and betray the country are cowards and weak people”.
The President said that Dhon Bandaarain did not accept the throne even after the victory in the war, which showed the loyalty of the hero and his loyal supporters.
The President said that Dhon Bandaarain’s refusal to even touch the money offered as gifts by the people, proves that he had only the intention of saving the country and religion without any selfish purposes.
Another noble characteristic of the hero of Huravee Day, the President said, was that every decision he took was for the country.
