Amjad Musthafa on Monday resigned as Chief Judicial Administrator.

He was appointed to the post on 19 February last year and stepped down after one year and two months. The reason for his resignation has not been disclosed.

He assumed the role five months after his predecessor, Aisha Rizna, resigned in September 2024. The position oversees the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA).

Amjad Musthafa has previously served as President of the Employment Tribunal and Vice-President of the Election Commission. He has also been a board director of the Maldives Tourism Development Corporation.

He holds a degree in Sharia and Law from the Islamic University of Maldives and a Master of Business Administration from Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom.

His resignation followed remarks by President Mohamed Muizzu on the role of administrative officials within the courts. The President said Monday that senior administrative staff exercise authority beyond that of judges in both lower and higher courts, affecting the functioning of the judiciary.

He made the remarks while addressing the need for changes to the Department of Judicial Administration under the Judicial Service Commission.
