The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has elected PNC MP Husnee Mubarak as its chairman.

The chairmanship became vacant following the resignation of PNC member and Maafushi MP Hussain Riza Adam. After his resignation, the Parliament approved the appointment of Husnee Mubarak to the commission post.

The JSC held a meeting today, during which members voted to elect Husnee as chairman. The commission has not published the voting details on its official website.

High Court Justice Mohamed Niyaz, who previously served as the JSC’s vice-president, resigned from that position last week but remains a member of the commission. The JSC elected a new vice-president on Wednesday last week.

The current composition of the JSC gives the ruling PNC a majority, allowing it influence over the commission and the judiciary if it maintains its majority in Parliament.

The members of the JSC are:

  • President Mohamed Muizzu’s representative Yazmeed

  • Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdullah

  • Manadhoo MP Husnee Mubarak

  • Deputy Attorney General Ahmed Usham

  • Civil Service Commission President Mohamed Mujthaba

  • Public representative appointed by Parliament Idrees Fauzee

  • Member elected by lawyers Ali Abdul Latheef

  • Supreme Court Justice Hussain Shaheed

  • High Court Judge Mohamed Niyaz

  • Civil Court Judge Farhaad Rasheed
