The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Monday appointed Justice Abdulla Jameel Moosa as Chief Justice of the High Court.

The position became vacant following the appointment of the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The JSC had earlier decided to appoint Mohamed Faisal, who resigned from the judiciary prior to taking up the post.

Three judges applied for the position. A JSC official told Dhauru that the commission selected Jameel after interviewing all candidates.

The other applicants were Justice Mohammed Shaniz Abdullah and Justice Abdul Rauf Ibrahim.

Jameel was appointed as a High Court judge on 3 August 2025 to fill a vacancy created after two judges were appointed to the Supreme Court.

He has served in the judiciary for more than 15 years. From 23 September 2003 to 31 January, he served as a magistrate at the Dhabidhoo Magistrate’s Court. From 1 February 2009 to 21 February 2019, he served as a judge of the Civil Court.

After leaving the judiciary, he worked as a lawyer for six years before returning to judicial service.
