PNC concludes internal elections for over 1,900 posts
Voting was conducted through 143 ballot boxes, including 53 in city constituencies.
Ruling People's National Congress (PNC) successfully concluded its internal elections on Saturday, filling over 1,900 positions across the party’s structure.
Polling took place from 10 am to 2 pm in 90 locations, including areas in capital Male. The election covered 1,984 positions, including:
-
Constituency presidents and vice presidents.
-
Members of the party’s steering committees.
-
Presidents of the Youth Movement and Women’s Movement in islands.
-
Presidents of the Youth and Women’s Movements for city constituencies.
A total of 667 candidates contested for posts, while others were filled without an election. Voting was conducted through 143 ballot boxes, including 53 in city constituencies.
President Mohamed Muizzu, currently on a private visit to the United Kingdom, extended his congratulations to all winners and expressed appreciation to those involved in organising the elections.
“I sincerely thank the candidates who contested for various positions, the team managing the election arrangements, and the members who voted today,” the president said in an X post.
The PNC declared 34,904 eligible voters for the elections, while the party’s membership on the Elections Commission’s register exceeds 65,000.
The elections proceeded without major incidents, except for a dispute in Th. Kandoodhoo. During the disagreement between two candidates, a ballot box was damaged, and votes were taken away, leading to the suspension of voting in the island.
The PNC described the overall election process as peaceful and stated that the smooth conclusion of an event of this scale reflects the party’s organisational strength.
