Abdulla Sodiq, who won the Hithadhoo North parliamentary by-election as the candidate of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), will be sworn in as a member of Parliament on Monday.
The People's Majlis announced on Wednesday that Sodiq's oath-taking ceremony will take place at 8:30 a.m. at Parliament.
The Hithadhoo North seat became vacant after the Supreme Court ruled that former MP Mohamed Sinan of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) had lost his seat due to an outstanding debt established through a court judgment.
The by-election to fill the vacancy was held last Saturday.
According to the official results announced by the Elections Commission on Monday, Sodiq secured 1,375 votes, representing 51.15 per cent of ballots cast.
His opponent, PNC candidate Ahmed Saeed, received 1,313 votes, accounting for 48.85 per cent of the vote.
The margin between the two candidates was 62 votes.
Of approximately 4,100 eligible voters, 2,739 cast ballots, resulting in a turnout of around 66 per cent.
The election was the first parliamentary by-election held during the current 20th People's Majlis following the vacancy of a seat.
