The Information Commissioner's Office (ICOM) has fined the President's Office MVR 2,000 for failing to provide information requested under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

The decision was announced following a hearing held on Monday.

According to ICOM, the penalty relates to five separate RTI requests submitted by Raajje TV. The commission said the President's Office did not provide the requested information within the timeframe required by law.

Speaking at the hearing, Information Commissioner Ahmed Ahid Rasheed said the President's Office also failed to comply after being granted additional time during an earlier hearing.

"Since the institution's total non-compliance with the directive is deemed an act that obstructs the statutory duties of the Information Commissioner, I intend to penalise them with a fine," Ahid said.

ICOM said the President's Office had failed to comply with the commission's directives despite receiving official notices.

The commission has previously issued warnings to the President's Office over delays in responding to RTI requests.

ICOM has also stated that where requested information is not disclosed after a final opportunity to comply, such cases may be referred to the Prosecutor General's Office for further action.
