Former President Mohamed Nasheed has been honoured with the Global Citizenship Award for his exceptional contributions to environmental protection, climate change advocacy, and societal development.

The award ceremony took place in Singapore on Thursday and celebrated his decades-long dedication to creating a more sustainable and equitable world.

The Global Citizenship Award, established by Henley & Partners in 2014, is a cornerstone of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. It recognises individuals who work tirelessly to advance human development and environmental sustainability on a global scale. Henley & Partners is a leading global organisation specialising in citizenship and residency solutions, with operations in 60 countries.

Nasheed, a long-time champion of climate action and human rights, has been lauded internationally for his transformative leadership. During his tenure as president, he brought global attention to the existential threat posed by climate change, particularly to low-lying island nations like the Maldives.

His commitment to these causes has earned him numerous accolades over the years, including being named one of Time Magazine's Heroes of the Environment and a spot on Foreign Policy Magazine's Top Global Thinkers list.

In a statement, the Democrats Party highlighted Nasheed's lifelong dedication to societal progress, saying: "President Nasheed’s life is marked by international awards and recognitions for his efforts in the defence of human rights and the fight against climate change."

Nasheed's presidency (2008–2012) was notable for its focus on environmental sustainability and democratic reforms. He famously held an underwater cabinet meeting in 2009 to draw attention to the rising sea levels threatening the Maldives.

Since then, he has remained an influential voice on the global stage, advocating for renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions, and protecting vulnerable communities from the adverse effects of climate change.

The Global Citizenship Award is the latest in a series of recognitions that underscore his contributions to global progress. This accolade not only celebrates his achievements but also serves as an inspiration for leaders worldwide to prioritise the well-being of the planet and its people.
