Nasheed steps back from active politics 'for now'
Nasheed’s statement comes as several Democratic party leaders rejoined the MDP this week.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed, a founding member of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) who exited and found The Democrats in 2023, announced on Monday that he is stepping away from active politics for now, but pledged that he would not be out of the political environment.
Nasheed described the MDP as being akin to his “own child” and referred to the Democrats, the party he formed in 2023, as a political platform for youth engagement.
In a post on X, Nasheed reflected on his contributions to the establishment of a multi-party political system in the Maldives.
“The MDP is like my child,” he wrote, emphasising that he does not oppose any political party.
Speaking about the Democrats, Nasheed said, “The Democrats I participated later were an opportunity for young people to participate in political activities.”
Nasheed clarified that he will not engage in active work with any political party at present. However, he added that he is not completely stepping away from the political landscape of the Maldives.
Nasheed’s statement comes as several Democratic party leaders rejoined the MDP this week. These include:
-
Hassan Latheef, President of the Democrats
-
Mohamed Shifaz, Vice President of the Democrats
-
Hussain Amr, former Managing Director of STO
-
Ali Azim, former member of parliament
