The Democrats, including former President Mohamed Nasheed, have decided to join the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The decision was made during a meeting of The Democrats’ National Assembly held Tuesday afternoon at Donmanik Skyview Restaurant. Of the 44 members present, 35 voted in favour of joining the MDP.
The resolution to rejoin the MDP was proposed by Fathimath Hamda Mohamed, leader of the Democrats’ Women’s Committee.
The resolution outlined three main reasons for the decision:
-
To contest the upcoming local council elections as part of a broader effort
-
To contribute to the development of the Maldives and promote an accountable state
-
To strengthen the multi-party political system by reinforcing the opposition
“While we believe that it is important for many people to work together for this purpose, we pledge to join the MDP to achieve this goal,” the resolution stated.
The move marks a significant political shift for members of The Democrats, a party formed by a breakaway faction from the MDP in 2023.
