The government has published a policy outlining the procedure for individuals who received land plots under the Binveriya housing scheme through joint applications to obtain separate plots.

The policy allows joint beneficiaries to relinquish their jointly allocated land and apply for individual plots, provided all co-applicants agree to return the original allocation.

President Mohamed Muizzu first announced the initiative during his Presidential Address at the opening of the People’s Majlis this year. He said a housing category would be introduced for joint applicants of the 2022 Binveriya scheme who wish to surrender their joint plot in exchange for separate land plots for each applicant.

To implement the measure, the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development has gazetted the “Policy Regarding the Special Binveriya Scheme”.

According to the ministry, the policy establishes the procedure for joint beneficiaries in the Malé area to voluntarily relinquish their allocated land and apply for separate plots.

The policy states that land under the scheme will be allocated from Rasmalé. Each applicant will receive a plot measuring 1,250 square feet.

Eligibility is limited to individuals who qualified under the Binveriya scheme and were listed as beneficiaries through joint applications. All joint beneficiaries must agree to return the originally allocated plot before applying for separate land.

The policy also allows applications from individuals who were previously disqualified from the Binveriya scheme because they were beneficiaries of government housing flats. In addition, individuals who already received land under the Binveriya scheme may apply if they agree to relinquish a flat allocated to them under a government housing project.

The Housing Ministry said the allocation process will depend on the number of eligible applicants and the number of available plots.

Applications will be submitted through an online portal established by the ministry when the application period opens.

During his address to Parliament, President Muizzu also said the government plans to allow individuals to apply for housing even if their spouse already owns property. He said the measure aims to expand access to housing and land ownership.
