Mariya takes over agriculture ministry temporarily
Rameela has resigned from her position as Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, citing health concerns.
President Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday assigned Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, Dr Maryam Mariya, to temporarily oversee the functioning of the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare.
The decision was made following the resignation of Dr Aishath Rameela, due to health concerns.
Rameela has resigned from her position as Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, citing health concerns.
The President's Office confirmed the resignation on Sunday.
Rameela stepped down due to her ongoing treatment for cancer, which was diagnosed at an advanced stage. She had previously traveled abroad for medical care related to the condition.
President Mohamed Muizzu expressed gratitude for Rameela’s contributions despite her illness.
"It has been an honour to have such an active and dependable individual in the cabinet. I am confident she will continue to serve the Maldives in other capacities," the president stated.
The president also extended well wishes for her recovery, expressing hope for her strength and perseverance during this challenging period.
Before serving as Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Rameela held the position of State Minister of Health. Her career in public service began in 1990 as a nurse.
