Maldives' foreign minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel met with Oman's foreign minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamoud Al-Busaidi on Wednesday.

The discussions aimed to reinforce the longstanding friendship between the two nations, focusing on trade, tourism, education, and increased investment opportunities.

The two ministers explored avenues for collaboration on issues of international interest, emphasising the importance of addressing global challenges together.

They also expressed mutual interest in convening the first meeting of political talks between the Maldives and Oman at the earliest opportunity, signalling a commitment to more structured and regular diplomatic engagement.

The meeting culminated in the signing of two pivotal agreements:

  • 1-

Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultation – Establishing a formal framework for regular political discussions.

  • 2-

Agreement on Visa Exemptions – Granting visa-free travel for holders of diplomatic, special, service, and official passports.

Khaleel further assured that visa exemptions for ordinary passport holders are also being implemented. Under special conditions, Maldivians can now travel to Oman without a visa, provided they meet certain eligibility criteria, such as possessing visas for specified countries.

The agreements reflect the deepening ties between the Maldives and Oman, fostering greater mobility and cooperation. Enhanced visa policies and political consultations are expected to pave the way for increased cultural exchange, business collaboration, and shared growth between the two nations.
