Govt assures landowner rights amid HDC forged land allocation

HDC Managing Director Fazul and board members have been suspended over allegations of irregularities in land allocation.

Presidential Spokesperson Heena Waleed said on Thursday that the rights of individuals allocated land under the Binveriya scheme will not be violated.

The remarks follow the suspension of Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul and board members over allegations of irregularities in land allocation.

In a post on X, Heena clarified that the suspensions were linked to the allocation of land in Hulhumale to Fazul’s brother, Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed, Deputy Managing Director of Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC). Fazeel was reportedly declared ineligible for the Binveriya scheme under the previous government.

“I assure all parties that no rights of any landowner have been or will be violated in this regard,” Heena wrote.

The controversy emerged after documents were leaked online, suggesting that two individuals were allocated the same plot of land in the second phase of Hulhumale. The leaked documents revealed:

  • Two claimants applied to HDC for permission to build a wall on the same plot of land.

  • HDC Deputy Director Ahmed Aiman sent a letter to the Housing Ministry in July to verify the rightful owner.

  • A response from State Minister for Housing Ibrahim Nizam on August 15 indicated that neither individual was listed as a beneficiary under the Binveriya scheme.

  • Leaked agreements suggest that Fazeel received land through allegedly forged documents.

Police have since entered HDC headquarters as part of their investigation into the matter.

During a press conference held before his suspension, Fazul stated that HDC identified the issue internally and initiated steps to verify its legitimacy. Fazul admitted awareness of the developments throughout the process but declined to answer several questions from journalists.

The incident has sparked allegations of corruption on social media, with scrutiny focusing on Fazul and HDC’s handling of the matter.
