MP seeks parliamentary probe over HDC's forged land allocation
Following the allegations, all HDC board members except Chairman Ahmed Nasif have been suspended.
Member of Parliament Mohamed Ibrahim on Wednesday formally requested the parliament to investigate allegations of improper land allocation by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
The controversy centres on claims that land was allocated to individuals not eligible under the Binveriya scheme, including the brother of HDC Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul, Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Fazeel.
The issue was brought to public attention after documents were leaked online by a fake account attributed to Hassan Kurusee. The documents suggest two individuals were allocated the same plot of land in the second phase of Hulhumale.
In a letter addressed to Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, MP Mohamed Ibrahim emphasised the need for a thorough investigation. He described the incident as involving the allocation of state land without providing corresponding benefits to the state.
The letter outlined key allegations:
-
Over 50 plots of land have allegedly been allocated improperly.
-
The total value of the land is estimated at more than MVR 400 million.
-
The housing ministry reportedly became aware of the issue five months ago but has not taken any action.
The MP urged the parliament to investigate the matter, identify those responsible, and instruct authorities to implement safeguards to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Following the allegations, all HDC board members except Chairman Ahmed Nasif have been suspended. This includes Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul.
The case has prompted widespread discussion, with calls for accountability from various sectors. The parliament is expected to consider the request for an investigation in the coming sessions.
