The Democrats have pledged to work alongside all political parties and organisations to hold the government accountable.

The decision was formalised through a resolution passed during the 11th meeting of the National Assembly on Thursday. The resolution, introduced by Democratic Vice President Mohamed Shifaz, highlighted concerns about the government's actions and proposed measures to address them.

Key reasons cited for the resolution include:

  • Alleged negligence and actions deemed harmful to the public and the Maldives.

  • Failure to fulfil electoral pledges.

  • Decisions perceived to harm the economy and finances of the country.

  • Increasing allegations of corruption and theft within the government.

  • Constitutional amendments that are seen as weakening democratic systems, altering state institutions to consolidate presidential control, and reducing government accountability.

The Democrats emphasised that a responsible government should not engage in such practices. They urged political parties and citizens to work towards redirecting the government and ensuring accountability.

"The Democrats pledge to collaborate with all political parties and organisations willing to join efforts to set the government on the right track and hold it accountable," the resolution stated.

A recent constitutional amendment has introduced provisions that strip members of parliament of their seats if they leave their party or join another.

In response, the opposition MDP passed a similar resolution during its National Assembly on December 10, calling for collaboration with other political parties and civil society organisations. Key points from the MDP resolution include:

  • Supporting members who lose their seats due to the amendment in any subsequent by-elections.

  • Taking the initiative to invite political parties, civil society organisations, and professionals to work together.

  • Expanding efforts nationwide and planning political activities across the Maldives.

  • Organising various types of protests in different regions.
