Three Somali nationals found travelling in a dinghy northwest of Fuvahmulah on Monday are currently in police custody as authorities investigate the incident, police said Tuesday.
Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) reported discovering the individuals approximately 10 miles from Fuvahmulah on Monday. Police have stated that relevant authorities have been informed, and appropriate actions are being taken regarding the detainees.
The dinghy carrying the three men follows a similar case reported last June, when a dinghy carrying three Somalis was intercepted.
In past instances, Somali nationals travelling to the Maldives have raised concerns of piracy. A notable sighting occurred near Alif Alif Atoll, where another group was located in a dinghy.
Before 2010, similar arrivals in the Maldives resulted in around 40 individuals being detained by authorities. Deportations were delayed in some cases due to difficulties in verifying the detainees' nationalities.
Investigations into the current case are ongoing.
