Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) on Tuesday issued a warning of bad weather for the next five days, citing heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds.

Preparations for the New Year are ongoing across the country despite the forecast. The following updates have been provided by the MET office:

  • A white alert has been issued from Haa Atoll to Kaafu Atoll.

  • Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected until 2 pm on Tuesday.

  • Winds are forecast to reach up to 40 mph in cloud-covered areas.

The adverse weather conditions are attributed to a cyclone and an associated low-pressure trough in the southeastern Maldives. According to the MET office, the following conditions are expected from tomorrow through Sunday:

  • Bad weather across most parts of the Maldives.

  • Heavy rain and thunderstorms.

  • Rough seas with potential flooding in some areas.

  • Winds reaching up to 50 mph in cloud-covered areas.

The MET office has urged travellers to exercise caution during the holiday period due to the challenging weather conditions.
