Civil Court orders Adeeb to pay outstanding MVR 1 million fine

Civil Court on Tuesday ordered former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor to pay MVR 1 million owed to the state within the next 30 days.

The order, issued yesterday by Judge Ahmed Rasheed, resolves a case filed by the Attorney General’s Office on August 14, 2022, to recover the outstanding amount. The case took over two years to conclude.

In October 2020, the Criminal Court sentenced Adeeb to 20 years in prison and imposed a fine of MVR 2 million as part of a plea agreement with the Prosecutor General’s Office. Adeeb had pleaded guilty to seven charges. Of the MVR 2 million, MVR 1 million had already been paid to the state.

During the court proceedings, Adeeb’s lawyer expressed concerns about the difficulty of paying the remaining MVR 1 million at once. However, the prosecution noted that the payment should be made in a month.

Adeeb's original sentence included 20 years of imprisonment and a fine, but during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Adeeb's sentence was significantly reduced to four days. The decision faced criticism from various quarters, with many questioning the rationale behind the reduction.

Adeeb had served much of his initial sentence under house arrest due to health conditions before his release.
