Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced plans to hold a street rally on January 31 in defence of the constitution.

The decision was made during the party's national assembly meeting on Wednesday.

This rally marks the first time the MDP will take to the streets since the current government assumed power. Two members of the party’s national assembly confirmed that a committee has been appointed to organise the rally.

The MDP initiated its efforts to defend the constitution following amendments passed swiftly by the government’s supermajority in parliament. One of the contested changes allows Members of Parliament (MPs) to lose their seats if they are removed from their party or leave it.

Last month, on January 10, the MDP organised a rally at the carnival area to protest these amendments. During the event, the party outlined its approach to addressing the issue, which includes:

  • Supporting and campaigning for any PNC MP who loses their seat due to party disassociation in by-elections.

  • Inviting other political parties, civil society organisations, and professionals to join forces in opposing the constitutional changes.

  • Expanding the movement nationwide and planning political activities in various regions of the Maldives.

The upcoming rally represents an escalation in the MDP's efforts to challenge these amendments and garner public support for their stance on the constitution.
