An emergency motion submitted by Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to debate the delay in handing over 4,000 flats in Hulhumalé Phase II was dismissed by Parliament on Monday.

The motion was rejected on the grounds that it did not meet the criteria set out in Rule 197(a) of the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, which requires that an emergency matter must relate to an event that occurred within the past seven days.

MP Mohamed Ibrahim submitted the motion stating that no progress had been made in handing over the flats announced by the previous government on 15 November. He argued that the continued delay was causing concern among recipients listed for allocation.

“This is an important issue that affects the lives of many,” the MP said in his motion. He cited potential consequences of the delay, including links between housing shortages and youth involvement in drug use and crime.

The MP stated that if the handover process is delayed further, it may worsen living conditions and contribute to increased social challenges.

Housing Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib had previously announced on 19 June that the handover of the flats is scheduled to begin next month, following the completion of necessary work.
