President Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday emphasized that the recent price hike on tobacco products is a proactive step to protect the health of the nation, aiming to prevent diseases caused by tobacco use.

Speaking during his visit to the Raa Atoll, the President highlighted that this decision aligns with his administration’s overarching health policy, which prioritizes disease prevention over treatment.

According to President Muizzu, the rise in tobacco prices is part of a broader effort to combat the severe health risks associated with smoking.

"The biggest problems are caused by smoking. So to encourage people to break free from this harmful behavior, I raised the price of these products," he said.

He further stressed that preventive healthcare has always been a key focus of his government, particularly during his presidential campaign.

“Preventing diseases before they occur is the most important policy of my health sector," President Muizzu reiterated, explaining that the initiative is not only about raising prices but also about changing societal attitudes toward smoking. His administration aims to create a "non-smoking society" where health and well-being are central to community life.

In a move to curb tobacco consumption, the government has increased the duty on tobacco products, leading to a significant price hike. A pack of cigarettes that previously cost MVR 100 now exceeds a 100% price increase, making it substantially more expensive for consumers.

Additionally, the government has taken strong action against vaping, imposing a ban on the use, sale, and distribution of e-cigarettes, with heavy fines for violations.

President Muizzu called for the full cooperation of the Maldivian public, urging citizens to consider the benefits of a smoke-free environment as an improvement for the islands.

"Our island is a non-smoking society, and it is an honor to receive that label," he remarked, highlighting the importance of collective action in tackling this public health issue.
