Democrats announces Imthiyaz as president, Waheed as VP
With the leadership positions left vacant, Imthiyaaz and Waheedh were the only candidates to contest the nominations.
The Democrats have officially elected Imthiyaaz Fahumee as their new President and Mohamed Waheedh (Wadde) as their Male Vice-President. The announcement came following the departure of the party’s first president, Henveiru West MP Hassan Latheef, and former vice-president Mohamed Shifaz, both of whom have rejoined the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
With the leadership positions left vacant, Imthiyaaz and Waheedh were the only candidates to contest the nominations. The Democratic National Assembly confirmed their election, stating:
-
Only one candidate applied for each position during the open nomination process.
-
As a result, Imthiyaaz Fahumee has been elected President and Mohamed Waheedh (Wadde) as Vice-President.
The decision was unanimously endorsed by all 34 members of the party's National Assembly, solidifying their leadership within the party.
The Democrats have seen several key figures leave the party to rejoin the MDP in recent weeks. Besides Hassan Latheef and Shifaz, notable departures include:
-
Ali Azim, former Democrats Parliamentary Group Leader
-
Hussain Amru, former STO Managing Director
These shifts highlight a significant realignment in Maldivian politics, with influential figures returning to the MDP amid leadership changes within the Democrats.
