
Marine researcher Hassan Shakeel passes away at 64
Shakeel, from Breezeville, HDh. Vaikaradhoo, had served in the public sector for 41 years.
Hassan Shakeel, a long-serving marine researcher, passed away on Saturday while undergoing treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). He was 64.

The Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI) stated that Shakeel played a key role in establishing the Marine Research Section. He pursued higher studies in marine biology in Russia, earning a Master’s degree in Biology.
According to the MMRI, he contributed significantly to marine conservation efforts and the development of marine science in the Maldives. He was also committed to encouraging more people to enter the field.
Shakeel was serving as the Deputy Director General of MMRI at the time of his passing. The institute acknowledged his contributions in expanding research, advancing knowledge, and mentoring professionals in the field.
“The staff at MMRI see Shakeel as a father figure,” the institute said in a statement.
MMRI stated that his contributions to marine research would be remembered.
