Parliament on Monday approved the appointment of Thorig Ibrahim as the Minister of Tourism and Environment.
Thorig previously served as the Minister of Environment before being appointed to the newly merged ministry on 1 February.
The post of Minister of Tourism became vacant following the dismissal of Ibrahim Faisal last month. Faisal is the son of former Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla.
During the parliamentary vote, 69 members voted in favour of Thorig’s appointment, with no votes against.
Following his appointment, Thorig stated that he would work to strengthen the tourism and environment sectors.
"I will do better than what the tourism sector and the environment are doing now and hopefully make the tourism sector [an industry] we are all proud of and benefit everyone," he said.
He added that the two sectors would collaborate on key initiatives.
President Mohamed Muizzu’s initial cabinet consisted of 22 ministers. The mandates of the Housing Ministry have been distributed between two other ministries, leading to its dissolution, while the Tourism and Environment Ministries have been merged.
