Long queues as govt distributes canned tuna for Ramadan

They have assured that the distribution will continue until the 27th of February, ensuring all eligible households receive their share.

As part of a government initiative to support households during the holy month of Ramadan, every household in the Maldives is set to receive a case of canned tuna. The distribution process commenced at 8:30 pm Thursday evening, drawing large crowds in Male, Hulhumale, and Villimale as people queued up hours before the scheduled start time.

Hundreds of people have gathered at the designated distribution points, waiting in line with their electricity meter numbers and ID cards, which are required to collect the tuna cases. The distribution points in Male and its surrounding islands are:

  • Male: MIFCO Office Compound and Henveiru MTCC Sawmill

  • Villimale: WAMCO site

  • Hulhumale Phase 1: Umar Zahir Building

  • Hulhumale Phase 2: Hiyaa Flat Tower 10 Youth Centre

With the high demand observed from the very first day, officials are working to ensure a smooth and orderly distribution process. Many residents, eager to secure their household’s share, have reported standing in queues well in advance of the opening time.

The State Trading Organisation (STO) has been entrusted with the responsibility of distributing the canned tuna cases in the Male’ region. They have assured that the distribution will continue until the 27th of February, ensuring all eligible households receive their share.

Scheduled distribution dates and rimings:

  • February 20: 8:30 pm – 11:00 pm

  • February 21: Closed

  • February 22: 10:00 am – 4:00 pm & 8:30 pm – 11:00 pm

  • February 23 to 27: 2:30 pm – 6:00 pm & 8:30 pm – 11:00 pm
