The Maldives Journalist Association (MJA) on Saturday called for a fair and immediate investigation into alleged threats made by President Mohamed Muizzu against Adhadhu newspaper CEO and journalist Hussain Fiyaz Moosa.

In a press release, the MJA condemned threats against journalists by the country’s leadership and expressed concern over the matter.

The statement follows a complaint filed by Adhadhu newspaper against President Muizzu regarding the alleged threats. The newspaper has also lodged a complaint with the police.

The MJA’s statement outlined the following points:

  • Threats against journalists by the country's leadership are unacceptable.

  • Such actions create fear among journalists and hinder their constitutional right to practice journalism.

  • If concerns arise regarding news reports, they should be addressed through appropriate channels.

  • The association condemns any threats or actions against journalists.

The MJA urged the police to investigate the complaint without delay. It also noted concerns over multiple instances where Adhadhu journalists have reported receiving threats.

The association stated that it had requested a response from the President’s Office regarding the complaint but had not received a reply.

According to a statement issued by Adhadhu, the president allegedly called Fiyaz and threatened him over remarks made by an opposition MDP member about the son of President Muizzu during ongoing protests. The newspaper claimed that the president warned of strong action against Adhadhu and Fiyaz.
