Supreme Court Judge Hussain Shaheed has been elected Vice President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The position became vacant following the resignation of Yazmeed Mohamed, who previously served as Vice President of the commission.

In a post on its official X account on Wednesday, the JSC confirmed that Shaheed was elected to the post during a commission meeting held earlier in the day.

Yazmeed served on the commission as the member appointed by President Mohamed Muizzu. Following his resignation, Ali Naseer Gasim was appointed to the commission on 21 May. Ali Naseer previously served as legal counsel to the Malé City Council and as a member of the Police Board.

The Judicial Service Commission is currently composed of:

  • Husnee Mubarak, MP for Manadhoo Constituency (President of the Commission)

  • Hussain Shaheed, Supreme Court Judge (Vice President of the Commission)

  • Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Speaker of Parliament

  • Idham Fauzee, public member appointed by Parliament

  • Ali Naseer Gasim, member appointed by the President

  • Ahmed Usham, Attorney General

  • Mohamed Mujthaz, President of the Civil Service Commission

  • Hassan Shafee, High Court Judge

  • Farhad Rasheed, Civil Court Judge representing lower courts

  • Ali Abdul Latheef, elected representative of licensed legal practitioners

Shaheed was appointed to the Supreme Court on 19 March 2025. After being nominated by the Supreme Court to represent the court on the JSC, he was sworn in as a commission member on 7 April 2025.

Before joining the Supreme Court, Shaheed served on the High Court for more than seven years. He was appointed as a High Court Judge on 24 July 2018, assumed the role of Acting Chief Judge on 18 November 2022, and was appointed Chief Judge of the High Court on 30 October 2023.

Shaheed joined the Supreme Court following the resignation of former Justice Husnu Al Suood. Suood resigned after being suspended while the court was hearing a constitutional case concerning amendments that allow members of parliament to lose their seats upon expulsion from their political party.
