President Mohamed Muizzu on Thursday appointed Ali Naseer Qasim as his representative to the Judicial Service Commission.

The position became vacant following the resignation of Yazmeed Mohamed.

A swearing-in ceremony was held at the President's Office on Thursday.

According to the President’s Office, Ali Naseer Qasim signed the oath of office during the ceremony, which was administered by Supreme Court Justice Ali Rashid Hussain.

Following the oath, President Muizzu presented the appointment letter to Naseer.

Ali Naseer Qasim previously served in the Maldives Police Service, including within its intelligence department. He also served as a member of the Police Board prior to the appointment.

Yazmeed Mohamed resigned from the JSC after the circulation of an audio recording last month in which a person believed to be Yazmeed was heard discussing support for candidates during the recent council elections.

Before Yazmeed’s appointment, the President’s representative on the JSC was Mohamed Sameer, a lawyer who previously worked at both the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office.

Yazmeed was appointed to the JSC in February last year after replacing Sameer.

He had also contested the parliamentary elections under the PPM-PNC coalition and previously served as a member of the Anti-Corruption Commission during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen.

At the time of his resignation, Yazmeed was serving as Vice President of the JSC. The position remains vacant.
