Govt awards MTCC 2-year contract for Hulhumalé court complex
The 14-storey building will accommodate the High Court, Civil Court, Criminal Court, Family Court, Drug Court and Juvenile Court under one roof.
The government has awarded Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) a contract to construct the new Malé Court Complex in Hulhumalé, with the project scheduled for completion within 720 days.
The agreement was signed on Saturday between the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure and MTCC during a ceremony held at the ministry.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the ministry by State Minister Youssef Abdul Ghafoor, while MTCC was represented by its Managing Director, Ahmed Saudi.
The court complex will be built on a site adjacent to Central Park in Hulhumalé.
According to the government, the 14-storey building will accommodate the High Court, Civil Court, Criminal Court, Family Court, Drug Court and Juvenile Court under one roof. It will also include office space for the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA).
The complex will include facilities intended to improve access to court services for judges, court staff and the public.
The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure said the project is expected to address the shortage of space faced by the judiciary.
Several courts currently operating in Malé are housed in ageing buildings, where heavy rainfall has disrupted court proceedings on multiple occasions. Limited space has also contributed to delays in hearings and case management.
The Criminal Court, which hears a large number of criminal cases, has relocated much of its work to temporary premises in Hulhumalé after its building in Malé was deemed unsuitable for regular operations.
Plans to establish a single court complex in Hulhumalé to accommodate the country's superior courts and judicial administration have been under discussion for several years.
