New Boduthakurufaanu Magu jetty design aims to end speedboat hopping

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has unveiled a revised harbour design for the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project, with plans to eliminate the need for passengers to move across moored speedboats when boarding or disembarking.

The President shared concept images and an animated video of the proposed design on X on Saturday.

The redesigned harbour forms part of the remaining works under the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project, as well as planned improvements to the outer ring road between the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) area and the Tsunami Monument.

"God willing, these remaining works will be completed before November next year," the President said.

The announcement follows public concern over the current harbour layout in front of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), where passengers travelling on speedboats are often required to cross from one vessel to another to reach the quay.

According to the proposed design, three finger piers will be constructed at the MMA harbour to provide direct berthing for passenger speedboats.

Each pier will accommodate up to 10 speedboats, with five berths on each side, allowing a total of 30 speedboats to dock at the same time.

The animation released by the President also shows plans for three additional finger piers along the jetty between Masveringe Park and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Those piers will have capacity for up to 18 speedboats.

The latest section of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project, extending from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the Presidential Jetty, was opened to traffic on Friday.

Earlier phases included the completion of the section between the Fish Market and North Harbour, which opened in February.

The next stage of construction will focus on the harbour area near Maldives Ports Limited.
