Court remands 2 suspects until end of trial in 1.5kg drug case

Roona, 29, of Bijileeufa, K. Thulusdhoo, and Alya Sharsa Naseer, 25, of G. Mutheegaage, Malé, were arrested in connection with the case.

Two individuals arrested in April on suspicion of smuggling 1.5 kilograms of narcotics into the Maldives have been remanded in custody until the conclusion of their trial.

The Criminal Court issued the remand order on Friday as the case proceeds.

The suspects are Alya Sharsa Naseer, 25, of G. Mutheegaage, Malé, and Aminath Roona, 29, of Bijileeufa, K. Thulusdhoo.

The investigation relates to allegations of smuggling more than one kilogram of narcotics into the Maldives by air, as well as drug trafficking and distribution.

According to information previously presented by police to the court, Roona played a leading role in the alleged smuggling operation.

Police also alleged that Alya travelled overseas under Roona's instructions.

Roona was arrested in Hulhumalé during a joint operation conducted by the Drug Enforcement Department and Counter Narcotics Intelligence.

The case remains under investigation.
