Court remands Roona until end of trial in drug smuggling case

Aminath Roona, who was arrested in April on suspicion of smuggling 1.5 kilograms of narcotics into the Maldives, has been remanded in custody until the conclusion of her trial.
The Criminal Court issued the remand order on Friday as the case proceeds.
Roona, 29, of Bijileeufa, K. Thulusdhoo, and Alya Sharsa Naseer, 25, of G. Mutheegaage, Malé, were arrested in connection with the case.
The investigation relates to allegations of smuggling more than one kilogram of narcotics into the Maldives by air, as well as drug trafficking and distribution.
According to information previously presented by police to the court, Roona played a leading role in bringing the drugs into the country.
Police also alleged that the second suspect travelled overseas under Roona's instructions.
Roona was arrested in Hulhumalé during a joint operation conducted by the Drug Enforcement Department and Counter Narcotics Intelligence.
The case remains under investigation.
