A court has sentenced a 59-year-old man to 25 years in prison after finding him guilty of trafficking diamorphine.

Police identified the man as Abdul Wahhab Ahmed of Addu Meedhoo.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered Abdul Wahhab on Sunday to pay a fine of MVR 100,000.

According to police, the case was reported to the agency in December 2021.

Police completed their investigation and forwarded the case to the Prosecutor General's Office for prosecution in January 2022.

Abdul Wahhab was convicted and sentenced nearly five years after the case was first reported.

Diamorphine, also known as heroin, is a controlled narcotic substance.

The sentence follows another diamorphine trafficking conviction in June, when Ali Ibrahim, 37, of Sh. Milandhoo, was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
