Motorcycle fleeing police crashes into car in Maafannu
Police said the motorcycle had been towed and the case was under investigation.
A motorcycle travelling against the flow of traffic on a one-way street in Maafannu crashed into a car early Tuesday after the rider failed to stop when instructed by police.
A police media official said the accident occurred at around 3am when the motorcycle, travelling against the permitted direction on Izzudheen Magu, collided with a car travelling along Majeedhee Magu.
According to police, officers had instructed the motorcyclist to stop before the accident, but the rider continued travelling against the one-way traffic flow.
The motorcycle subsequently struck the left-side door of the car at the junction.
“Although the 20-year-old male riding the motorcycle sustained injuries in the crash, they were not serious,” the police media official said.
Police said the motorcycle had been towed and the case was under investigation.
Both vehicles sustained damage in the collision, with the motorcycle receiving most of the damage.
The incident comes as police statistics show that about 2,000 road accidents have been recorded in the Maldives so far this year.
More than 150 accidents have been recorded so far this month, while 242 were reported last month. Police recorded 3,080 traffic accidents during the whole of last year.
