Over 1,300 road accidents recorded in Greater Malé during first half of year
January recorded the highest number of accidents, with 253 cases, while February recorded the lowest, with 191.
A total of 1,355 road accidents were recorded in Malé, the Sinamalé Bridge and the highway during the first six months of the year, according to police statistics.
The figures indicate an average of about seven accidents a day, or 226 accidents each month.
Police data shows that more than 80 per cent of the accidents occurred in Malé, while around two-thirds took place during daylight hours.
Of the total incidents, 1,322 resulted in minor injuries. Police recorded 31 accidents involving serious injuries and two fatalities during the six-month period.

A total of 1,482 vehicles were damaged in the reported accidents.
According to the statistics, insurance claims arising from the accidents exceeded MVR 3.2 million during the six months, representing an average monthly payout of MVR 547,437.
Commenting on the figures, police said road traffic accidents continue to be a concern for the community.
The police urged motorists and other road users to comply with traffic regulations and exercise caution to help reduce accidents and improve road safety.
