Driver arrested after Hulhumalé hit-and-run; beer cans found in vehicle

A 26-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly leaving the scene of a traffic accident in Hulhumalé Phase II, with police saying beer cans were later found in the vehicle he was driving.

Police said the accident occurred on Sunday night on Berebedhi Magu in Hulhumalé Phase II, when a vehicle struck a parked car.

The driver allegedly left the scene without stopping, prompting police to search for him. He was later located and arrested.

Police identified the suspect as Gufraan Khalid, 26, from L. Kalaidhoo.

According to police, the man appeared to be intoxicated when officers located him. Officers subsequently searched the vehicle on suspicion that it contained alcohol.

Police said the search found one can containing beer and two empty beer cans.

The suspect was taken to court following his arrest and remanded for 10 days.

Police said the case remains under investigation.
