A motorcycle travelling against the flow of traffic in Hulhumalé Phase 2 was being ridden by a person without the required driving licence and is suspected to have been stolen, police said on Wednesday.
Five people were injured when two motorcycles collided at around 2:55am on Wednesday.
The injured were initially treated at Hulhumalé Hospital before being transferred to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for further treatment.
Police, citing information from the hospital, said four of the five were in serious condition.
According to police, one of the motorcycles involved in the collision was carrying three people and was travelling against the flow of traffic on a one-way road.
Police said the motorcycle is suspected to have been stolen, while the person riding it did not hold a driving licence for that category of vehicle.
The collision occurred when the motorcycle travelling against the flow of traffic struck another motorcycle entering the road, police said.
A video circulating on social media following the collision showed some of those involved with serious injuries. Both motorcycles also sustained extensive damage.
Police said the accident remains under investigation.
