Three people, including two young adults, have died of cancer in the Maldives within a period of six days.
The deaths come amid concern over the number of cancer cases being diagnosed in the country and the number of people dying from the disease.
The first of the three deaths was that of Ali Shahumee, known as Alikko, 36, who died last Wednesday. Shahumee, who was known in the racing community, died about a week after being diagnosed with bone cancer.
The father of two died two days after travelling to India for treatment.
Abdulla Jameel, 55, from Th. Thimarafushi, died on Saturday after undergoing treatment for cancer.
The third person, Aishath Fahuriyya, 29, from B. Dharavandhoo, died on Sunday. She had been diagnosed with stage four uterine cancer seven months earlier.
Statistics cited in the report show that at least 1,106 new cancer cases were recorded between 2020 and 2025.
The figures show 137 new cases were recorded in 2020, followed by 208 in 2021, 244 in 2022, 211 in 2023, 195 in 2024 and 111 in 2025.
More than 1,600 people have so far been registered in the Maldives cancer registry, while 2,000 patients have been sent abroad for cancer treatment at government expense, according to the figures cited in the report.
Although concerns have been raised over cancer cases and deaths in the Maldives, the report said no study has yet been conducted to determine the reasons behind the trend.
