MFDA bans falsified batch of cancer drug Opdivo found in Maldives

The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has prohibited the import, sale and use of a falsified batch of an injectable medicine used in cancer treatment after confirming that the product had entered the Maldives.
In an alert issued on Wednesday, the MFDA said a batch of injections falsified to imitate Opdivo, a brand of the medicine nivolumab, had been identified in the country.
The affected product carries batch number 8081399 and is labelled as Opdivo 10 mg/mL, supplied as a 40 mg/4 mL injection.
According to the product information cited by the MFDA, the medicine is labelled as being manufactured by Swords Laboratories Unlimited Company, Bristol Myers Squibb Cruiserath Biologics, Ireland.
Nivolumab is a medicine used in the treatment of several types of cancer.
The MFDA instructed pharmaceutical importers, healthcare facilities and members of the public not to import, sell or use products carrying the identified batch number.
The authority said the restriction applies specifically to the falsified batch identified in its alert.
The MFDA urged anyone possessing the affected product or with information relating to it to contact the authority.
