Measles cases continue to decline in Malé area

The number of measles cases reported in the Greater Malé area declined last week, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
HPA reported 13 confirmed cases during the week, down from 20 cases recorded the previous week. The figure also marks a decline from an earlier week in which more than 40 cases were reported.
Weekly statistics released by the agency indicate a continuing downward trend in new infections.
According to HPA, a total of 199 people have tested positive for measles since the outbreak began.
The agency also said 12,971 people have received measles vaccinations as part of its response to the outbreak.
HPA warned that measles weakens the immune system, increasing the risk of secondary infections and other complications.
The agency reiterated that vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent measles and urged eligible individuals to complete the recommended two-dose vaccination schedule.
