Police on Saturday suspended the driving licence of the man involved in Friday’s accident on the Bridge Highway, where a car overturned after hitting structures supporting solar panels near Hulhumalé.

The accident occurred at about 8:40 am on Friday as the vehicle was travelling near the descent towards Hulhumalé. Police said the car lost control and struck pipes supporting solar panels before overturning.

Police identified the driver as Hassan Rifau, 40, of Munich, B. Kamadhoo. Rifau is the Chief Executive Officer of The Hawks, a fuel importing company in the Maldives.

Police said Rifau’s driving licence has now been suspended following the accident.

A 13-year-old child was also travelling in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Rifau and the child were taken to Tree Top Hospital for treatment and were later discharged. Police previously said neither sustained serious injuries.

The accident caused damage to the vehicle and the solar panel structures installed along the highway.

According to police, the vehicle was damaged to the extent that it could no longer be used. Its parts have since been handed over to the owner.

Police did not identify the registered owner of the vehicle. However, reports indicate that the vehicle belongs to The Hawks.
