A car overturned on the Bridge Highway on Friday morning after crashing into support structures for solar panels near the descent into Hulhumalé, police have said.

The accident was reported at around 8:40 am.

According to police, the vehicle lost control before striking pipes supporting solar panels installed alongside the highway. The impact caused the car to overturn.

An adult and a child were inside the vehicle at the time of the accident.

“The two individuals are currently receiving treatment at Tree Top Hospital. No serious injuries were reported in this accident,” police said.

The collision caused damage to the vehicle and the solar panel structures.

Police temporarily closed part of the road following the accident while officers worked to remove the overturned vehicle and clear the area.

The vehicle was covered with a tarpaulin after members of the public gathered at the scene.

The incident comes amid continued concern over the number of road accidents recorded in the Maldives.

According to Maldives Police Service statistics, around 2,000 traffic accidents have been recorded so far this year.

More than 100 accidents have been reported this month, while 242 were recorded last month.

Police statistics show that 3,080 traffic accidents were recorded across the country last year.
