Singapore family sues school over girl's death in Maldives
The lawsuit was filed in the Singapore High Court on what would have been Jenna's 17th birthday.
The family of a Singaporean student who died during a school trip to the Maldives has filed a lawsuit against Singapore's St. Joseph's Institution International (SJII) over the incident.
Students from SJII travelled to Adh. Dhigurah in the Maldives as part of a school project. During the trip in 2024, 15-year-old Jenna Chen died after being struck by a boat while snorkelling.
According to Singaporean media reports, Jenna's family said they spent 20 months seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding her death before deciding to file legal action. They said their efforts to resolve the matter had been unsuccessful.
"It has been one and a half years without any answers. We want to ensure that no other child experiences what Jenna did," the family said.
The family also alleged that the school did not arrange a meeting with the teachers who accompanied the students on the trip.

Jenna was struck by the propeller of the boat shortly after entering the water for a snorkelling activity. She was taken to the Dhigurah Health Centre, where she was pronounced dead.
