Police have arrested a man on suspicion of practising sorcery following an operation at a guesthouse in Malé.
According to a remand order issued by the Criminal Court on Friday, the suspect was arrested on Thursday night from a room at the Maafannu Holiday Inn, also known as Holiday Stay.
Police said the operation was launched after Police Intelligence received information alleging that sorcery was being practised at the premises. Officers searched the guesthouse room under a court warrant.
The suspect has been identified as Moosa Naeem, 63, of Huduveli, Sh. Feydhoo.
The Criminal Court ordered that Naeem be remanded in custody for 15 days.
Police said officers recovered a number of items from the room that are believed to have been used in the alleged practice of sorcery.
The investigation is ongoing.
